The recent confirmation on the discontinuation of the 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription does not necessarily mean that the company would drop all Gold's features. But, Microsoft could be. Every online experience game on Xbox requires gold as opposed to Playstation where free mp games don't require Playstation plus (or whatever their service is called) Can confirm Apex and Fortnite and stuff are free on PS4. I think that whole 'console internet' is a bloody scam, and should be against the law. There's now also a dedicated Xbox Game Pass for PC. It can be subscribed to on its own or as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which includes console, PC, and an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Buy minecraft pc version.

Earlier this month, Microsoft has stopped offering 12 month Xbox Live Gold subscriptions on its online store, leading to speculation about the subscription possibly going away soon. Video games journalist Jeff Grubb added fuel to the fire today following the news of Halo: Infinite coming with a 'free to play multiplayer experience.'
'Free-to-play Halo MP only makes sense if Xbox Live Gold barrier goes away at least for free games,' Grubb first tweeted this morning. When asked to elaborate, Grubb said in another tweet that 'Xbox Live Gold is going away and playing online multiplayer will be free. They will not force you into Ultimate to play online.' How To Play Fortnite Without Xbox Live
Microsoft requiring Xbox Live Gold to play free-to-play multiplayer games on Xbox One has been a regular point of criticism in recent years, especially since Sony doesn't require PlayStation 4 players to subscribe to PlayStation Plus to play games like Fortnite. However, there are some signs showing that the online multiplayer paywall for free to play Xbox games may be here to stay.
During its Xbox Games Showcase last week, Microsoft showed a new trailer for CrossFireX, a free-to-play multiplayer game that will be available on Xbox One later this year. The trailer had a message indicating that Xbox Live Gold will be required to play CrossfireX, as you can see in the screenshot below.
Does Fortnite Need Gold
Xbox Live Gold is one of Microsoft's oldest subscription services, and even though the company doesn't share the number of subscribers, it's definitely a big source of revenue for the company. Xbox Live Gold not only provides access to multiplayer on Xbox consoles, but it also includes four free games every month plus access to weekly 'Deals with Gold' for Xbox One and Xbox 360 games.
Xbox gamers may be used to pay for Xbox Live Gold to play multiplayer games, but with Microsoft being one of the biggest supporters of cross-play multiplayer in recent years, the online multiplayer paywall for free to play games on Xbox is looking increasingly anachronic. With the launch of the Xbox Series X just a couple of months away, it would make sense for Microsoft to match Sony's policy regarding free-to-play multiplayer games. Keep in mind that Microsoft would still make money from free-to-play games by taking a cut on in-games purchases.

Since Fortnite is free to play, do I need to have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play this game online with friends or can anyone play a free to play game on XBL without needing to pay?
According to the game information on the Xbox live store here, you will be unable to play the game if you do not have Xbox live. The description for the game on the store reads 'Xbox Live Gold required. Currently in Early Access.'. This is the same for the Playstation 4 and it is meant to change when the game exists early access. For the moment at least, you will need to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription if you want to play Fortnites Battle Royale game mode.
